Sub Regional Preview: Carolina's Gabe Bryant

During a particularly busy December Saturday of basketball, I was surprised to see my fellow GAIS Eagles coach Will Avery's Facebook post urging Augusta's basketball fans to attend his game versus the Carolina Chargers' and its 6'7" 8th grade post player Gabe Bryant.  After missing the game due to a scheduling conflict, I was somewhat surprised to learn from Will that Bryant was not only tall, but extremely skilled, for his age.  "He drop stepped and dunked in the post on us" was the first thing I was told.  I didn't ask any more questions.

After leading Duke to within one possession of a national championship in 1999 and playing three seasons for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Avery has seen his more than his share of talented players.  After this first meeting in December, Bryant followed up by leading his Chargers to junior varsity and middle school wins over the Eagles in February.  And Will continue to sing his praises.  This first year program has burst onto the scene, earning a 2nd seed and a 3rd seed in the middle school and junior varsity division of this weekend's Southeast Sub Regional homeschool tournament in Augusta, GA.  The team's leader has undoubtedly earned the respect not only of Avery, but of opposing coaches throughout the region.  Bryant joins Raleigh's Chris Barnette and GAIS's talented group of middle school players as young players to watch this weekend!
